The League
Rooted in heritage. United through sport.
Our History
How it started
The Stamford Italian Soccer League was founded in 1994, inspired by the excitement surrounding the FIFA World Cup coming to the United States that summer.
What began as informal Sunday pickup matches between Italian-American fathers, sons, relatives and friends quickly grew into a vision for something bigger: a league that would preserve Italian heritage while bringing the community together through the game they loved.
Local Italian-American social clubs answered the call, forming teams that proudly represented the provinces and hometowns from which Stamford's immigrant families originated. More than just soccer clubs, each team embodies the traditions, pride and identity of its respective Italian community, with many sponsored by the very social clubs that have served generations of Italian Americans in Stamford.
More than three decades later, the league has grown into one of Stamford's longest-running amateur sports traditions. It continues to unite generations of players and families while celebrating Italian culture through competition, community service, scholarships, charitable giving and the annual Columbus Day Tournament Finals.
Italian-American roots
Beginning in the early 1900s, thousands of Italian immigrants settled in Stamford, bringing with them the traditions, dialects and hometown pride of the regions and provinces they left behind. Many formed social clubs where families gathered to celebrate patron saints, preserve traditions and support one another.
When the league was founded in 1994, those same communities came together again. Rather than creating generic soccer teams, the league honoured Stamford's Italian roots by naming each club after the hometowns and provinces that shaped the local Italian-American community. Today, every club carries that legacy onto the field.
The Sunday tradition
Matches are played on Sundays from August through October. Roughly 180 adult players take part each season, many of them parents, professionals and lifelong residents, alongside newer arrivals from across Fairfield and Westchester counties. Some travel a considerable distance every week to play.
The league is multi-generational by design. Founding members from 1994 still sit on the board and coach. Players who grew up watching their fathers on Sunday afternoons now turn out for the same clubs.
Founded by Italian-American immigrants. Embraced by all of Stamford.
Mission
What the league is for
To preserve Italian-American heritage in Stamford through competitive adult football, and to keep the traditions of the city's immigrant families alive for the generation that comes next.
That means real competition on the field, and real work off it: scholarships for local student-athletes, community events that are free to attend, and long-standing partnerships with the social clubs and small businesses that have supported these communities for decades.
Leadership
The people who run it
The league is run entirely by volunteers, several of whom have been involved since the first season in 1994.

Partnership
SISL and Integrità | The Papallo Family Fund
The Stamford Italian Soccer League is its own league with its own board, its own clubs and its own competition. Integrità | The Papallo Family Fund is a separate Stamford 501(c)(3) organisation.
The two work together on scholarships, youth opportunity, community events and charitable giving. Christopher Papallo, a co-founder and director of the Fund, serves as the league's Chief Operating Officer. Donations, sponsorship payments and scholarship contributions are handled by the Fund rather than by the league.
