Our History

How it started

The Stamford Italian Soccer League was founded in 1994, inspired by the FIFA World Cup being hosted in the United States that summer. Informal Sunday matches between Italian-American fathers, sons and friends grew into a league built to preserve Italian heritage through the game.

The city’s Italian-American social clubs formed the teams, each named for the province or hometown its families had left behind. Three decades on, it is one of Stamford’s longest-running sporting traditions, with roughly 180 adult players taking part each season.

The societies behind those clubs have their own long history in Stamford, Greenwich and Norwalk.

Our mission

To preserve and promote Italian-American heritage in Stamford through competitive adult soccer, and to keep the traditions of the city’s immigrant families alive for the generation that comes next. That means real competition on the field, and real work off it: scholarships and grants, free community events, and long-standing partnerships with local social clubs and businesses.

Stamford Italian Soccer League and Integrità

The Stamford Italian Soccer League is a nonprofit 501(c)(4) organization dedicated to soccer, Italian-American heritage, and community. Integrità | The Papallo Family Fund is a separate 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

The organizations work together on scholarships and grants, community programming, youth opportunity, charitable initiatives, and local events.
